Workshop Facilitator

Mr. Michael Phillips, Deputy Head of Early Childhood in MMI, has been a resident of Asia for the past nine years. He is a pioneer in ECFE in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, with over thirty-eight years of experience in teaching music in primary and early childhood classrooms. His interactive early childhood  family concerts, lectures and workshops have motivated teachers, students and parents with his energetic spirit and love of guiding children in learning internationally.

Workshop 1: Morning Session (9:00am-12:30pm)

The Power of Music

Description of workshop
This workshop will help teachers and parents to see and realize the power that music, singing, rapping, rhyming and movement have as teaching tools for learning as well as playing in the classroom when Montessori methods are applied.

Objectives of workshop

1. Understand that music has many elements for use in the classroom and home (singing, movement, dancing, art, rhythm, rap, rhyme, instruments)
2. An understanding of how to apply Montessori Philosophy to music and movement
3. Re-enforce the ways music can teach manners and values, to help young minds learn with joy.
4. Provide teachers and parents with new and easy songs, raps, rhythms and rhymes.
5. Give old songs a renewed and fresh look by providing new creative ideas for using them for teaching them in the classroom and at home                                     
6. Equip parents and teachers with creative skills to improve and expand flexibility in relating to young children through music and movement
9. Open the teacher’s and parent’s eyes to the simplicity of creativity in music and movement when they observe and follow the young child’s lead
10. Enjoy A FUN FILLED ride in the ART OF using MUSIC

Contents of workshop

  • Hands on activities in creating props, dance steps, homemade rhythm instruments
  • Music and/or Lyrics for songs
  • New and original songs written by Michael
  • Individual and group creative opportunities
  • How to use classical music in the pre-school classroom
  • Rhythm sticks and how to incorporate them into a lesson
  • Musical Games, large muscle activities and LOTS of FUN
 

Workshop 2: Afternoon Session (1:30pm-5:00pm)

Drama for Young Children

Description of workshop
This workshop will help participants to see drama as a tool for helping the young child normalize and develop speech using their voice with confidence while developing their language communications skills, physical expression, creative thinking, problem solving and self-discovery abilities. 

Objectives of workshop

1. Understand that dramatic play has many elements and ways of being used in the classroom to create fun-filled activities (puppets, mime, characterization, story telling, etc.) as well as build confidence and self-esteem through the learning experience.
2. See how dramatic play can help children learn and grow in many subject areas.
3. Participants will feel the power and experience the ability to create a memorable dramatic play for themselves and to share with their children.
5. Enjoy a FUN-FILLED ride in the art of using dramatic play

Contents of workshop

  • Hands on activities in creating props
  • Incorporate a song, rhythm instruments and/or a dance into the drama activity
  • Dramatic play with puppets
  • Individual and group creative opportunities
  • How to develop voices, gestures and costumes that a child can use effectively and easily
 

Please Note:

Please bring along a pair of old socks and pair of old pants that can be cut up to make puppets.
